New opportunities to start canoeing: The Community Sports Coach will be running a new junior beginners group on a Thursday evening 6-8pm, starting after Easter. Paddlers are welcome to three taster sessions at £3 each before committing to the year-long course and joining the club (£21 for the first year). This group is aimed at introducing juniors to competitive canoe slalom.

There will also be a taster session, open to all ages, on Tuesday 1st April 1-3pm.

Greg Pit Wins MINI Slalom Series: This year Tony, Jeanette and Eileen Symes presented the Roger Symes Trophy to Greg Pitt, winner of the 2008 Stone Mini Slalom Series. The event had been keenly faught between the two Gregs throughout the series. In the end a flawless run from Greg Pitt saw him through to victory with Lara Horne shooting up the rankings to get second place ahead of Greg Hitchen from Matlock. International Stars at S&S Mini Slalom: Top international paddlers from Italy, Great Britain, Netherlands and Ireland joined over 50 Stafford & Stone Canoe Club paddlers for their first Mini Slalom this year.

Daniele Molmenti, a 2006 Slalom World Cup winner from Italy, posted the fastest time, while GB team members Laura Blakeman and Lizzie Neave came in overall 1st and 2nd places.

The handicapped pre-season series of slaloms attracted over 130 paddlers from all over the country. All abilities race against each other on the river Trent slalom course at Westbridge Park, Stone.

Lower division paddlers from Stafford & Stone dominated the top places. 1st Div 4 man was Sam Miles, 2nd, Matthew Parton, 3rd Jack Weddell whilst in the ladies division, 1st was Katie Brownhill, 2nd was Lara Horne and 3rd was Jasmine Manuel. 1st Division 3 man was Tom Woodhead and 1st Division 3 lady was Rosie Bates, 2nd was Becky Heath. All are juniors from the local club.
