Stafford and Stone Canoe Club’s Chris Bowers already had two wins to confirm his U23 place so wasn’t under any pressure. In junior C1, on the other hand, the race was wide open with a total of 7 boats in contention, two of which race for Stafford and Stone CC. Alfie Boote already had a win and a 5th place and Kurts Adams Rozentals with a 3rd place only. Many hours were spent working out the combinations but, in the end there is only one thing to do.  That’s paddle your best and see what comes of it.

First runs, Alfie paddled conservatively but errors by others left him heading the table and Kurts Adams managed to just make it into the finals in 4th place.  For the selection races only 6 make it through to second runs for the purposes of selection so this is a key component.  In the finals, Alfie was unable to improve and had a touch as well.  Kurts Adams, however, went into an early lead and as each of the four remaining paddlers came down they split Kurts Adams and Alfie.  In the end, Kurts Adams took first place and Alfie 6th and out came the bits of paper and the calculators.  The end result, both Kurts Adams and Alfie make Team GB and will race at the Junior World Championships at Krakow and the Junior European Championships at Liptovsky Mikulas.  Chris Bowers will also race at the same venues as U23.

Sam Maingay was also named reserve for U23, and Kurts Adams Rozentals (in K1M) and Luc Royle were named reserves in Juniors.  In all 11 Stafford and Stone members competed in selection for U23 and Junior GB places and many more raced for National Premier Position ranking points.
