Canoe slalom combines the power of Olympic weightlifting with the individual style of tennis. Add to that the endurance of an 800m runner and the precision of a gymnast and you will have an idea of what it takes to be a Champion in this incredible sport!
Canoe slalom is an Olympic sport combining speed with skill. It is a time-trial event to negotiate a course marked out down a river. At novice levels these events are held on flat or gently moving water, but at international and Olympic level the gates are positioned over the hardest and fastest flowing sections of large white-water rivers. Events are held all over the country from February to October.
In Britain there are five divisions, starting at four up to Premier. You gain promotion by either winning races or accumulating points over the season. Any age is welcome, there are usually junior and veteran prizes, although all ages race together.
Getting Started - Kids
Well done for deciding to get involved in a fantastic sport with one of most reputable canoe clubs in the country! Coaching is provided throughout the year but spaces are often filled quickly for new groups and you will need to register your interest with the the beginners coach to find out when the next group will be running.
Getting Started - Adults

Unfortunately the club cannot currently support any new adult beginners, and there are no plans to run any courses or taster sessions until at least Spring 2012. Trentham Canoe Club or Stafford Watersports may be worth contacting in the meantime. Anyone who is already a competent paddler and interested in slalom should contact the club secretary.
If you have any general queries about slalom kayaking as an adult beginner you may wish to post any questions on our facebook page.
