Finishing Touches to the Club House

14th April 2011

Update for all you 'eager-beaver' Stafford and Stone CC Canoeists (and Kayaker's)....

If you have seen the club in the last couple of days, the builders have almost gone and the current hope is for the club to be open for use after the Bank holiday Easter Weekend.
The official opening ceremony will be later on this year, and it is expect that the club will be available to be in use before this time.

Those of you who have had the luxury of a peek inside, will know, the electrics are not yet connected. It is hoped this will be done soon along with the heating system.

The club is currently, assessing the situation with keys, and will ensure that everyone knows when and where to collect their new key/s, when appropriate. (Probably in the week after Easter).

Please note the fencing around the club will remain in place until it is fully functional, (Do not remove it or enter this area unnecessarily.) But if you are able to lend a hand with boat racking, or fitting out the members/club or back stores; then please do liaise with committee members, and we will keep you informed of when you would be of most use.

Thank you all again.... nearly there.... Happy Paddling, and hope you all have a good Easter.

Stafford and Stone Paddlers Race at Australian Open World Ranking Event

Saturday 05th March 2011

Adam Burgess and Gregg Pitt at the Australian Open World Ranking Event

Five club members took part in the first Senior World Ranking event of 2011 – the Australian Open in Penrith, Sydney.

Achievements were:

C2 – Adam Burgess and Greg Pitt made their first major international final of the year – coming 10th overall in the Senior category and gaining first place on the podium in the Under 23 category!

In C1 Mark Proctor made the final and finished  10th in the Seniors and was ranked 2nd under 23.
Adam Burgess finished 14th in the Senior ranking and 3rd overall in the U23 category.
Greg Pitt finished 17th overall.

Also racing at the event in K1M were Tom Brady and Robin Vasey, finishing 54th and 65th respectively.

These results are very impressive considering that the competition was extremely tough as the majority of the World’s best paddlers were at the event, many of whom had spent several weeks out there training beforehand and who have several years experience of the venue.

Well done to our lads!

Slalom Injuries Survey

Saturday 05th March 2011

Please take a few minutes to complete this survey. I am attempting to establish injury rates amongst UK Slalom paddlers to see if there is a gender bias. Your input would really be a great help, regardless of the injury or your age or gender.
Thank you in advance,
Kendall Chew

First of the 2011 Minis Report

Sunday 16th January

At the first of this year's handicapped Mini Slalom Series, it was Canadian Doubles crew Sunderland/Coates who took the lead after first runs with Becky Heath in second place and Laura Blakeman in third.

This year's early season races are being organised from tents and marquees as the new clubhouse is currently under construction. The heavy rain that came from lunchtime onwards was most unwelcome.

Eventual winner of the first race was Stafford and Stone CC paddler, Laura Blakeman with a time which was only just over a second slower than the fastest man, club secretary, Rob Holdway. Laura has competed for Team GB many times including at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The C2 crew of Sunderland/Coates was second and Becky Heath third. Fourth place was taken by John Braithwaite with Rob Holdway in fifth. Youngest paddler was Luc Royle aged seven who completed the course both runs with only a touch on one gate on each run.

Thankyou to Quickflow Sports and Cool Blue Canoes who both provided prizes for the raffle.

The next Mini Slalom will take place on 30th January but, in the meantime, Stafford and Stone CC are organising a 24 hour record breaking slalom attempt on 22/23 January as a fund raising effort for the final funds required to finish construction of the new clubhouse. Also at Westbridge Park, Stone, this event will run from mid-day saturday to mid-day Sunday with canoeists paddling right through the night to secure the record. Have a look at the details here

Results can be found on the results page.
